discussions > Bookmarking - I'm new and am getting confused
Hi Lilian,
Social Bookmarking is one part of a long term SEO strategy. Social bookmarks are PERMANENT ONE WAY backlinks for your website from high PR sites! These backlinks will always be there in someone else's Digg, StumbleUpon or social bookmarking account. And these links have a way of multiplying because other people can come across these sites through the social network and then stumble or bookmark the site themselves. So this approach can end up giving you lots of PERMANENT ONE WAY backlinks from sites like StumbleUpon that have a very high pagerank.
It may not be a bad idea to list blog links and posts here so we can bookmark each other because I heard that constantly bookmarking your own content can be seen as spammy and was actually warned by Newsvine a while back on this. There is a DIGG community on Facebook that I am an officer in and we bookmark each other's sites and articles to increase backlinks and page ranks. I just discovered one of my sites I built last month is now a pagerank of 2 when another I built 3 months ago has 3 times more backlinks is a PR of 1 still --so I am not sure how PageRank is ultimately determined but I know the more backlinks you have linking to your site will help you rank for the terms of the anchor text and you will benefit from higher ranked pages linking to you (called "lnk juice") You can check your page rank free here: http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
Hope that helps
To Your Massive Success!!

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your reply.
Although I still don't quite get the picture of how these bookmarking sites work but thanks for letting me know that by constantly bookimarking my content is viewed as spamming.
Pardon me for asking so many questions, I'm still not sure.
- wouldn't bookmarking fellow member's sites or links give them more chances to get exposure than me?
- there's no assurance that if I bookmark 10 member's sites, I would get 10 backlilnks in return right?
- if we aim to get high page rank for our site on google, does that mean that all of my pages/posts/links have to use the same tags too? (I'm not even sure if tags and PR are related)
Do let me know if I should bring these questions elsewhere and where should I ask. I know there isn't much activity going on in the ccp forum as I have been there a few time, so I'm not sure if I'll get answers there.
Thanks and regards,
Lilian
Hi Lilian,
While Bookmarking other sites helps others -- it is not a two way street. You can add friends on many of the networks (ie: Digg) and then bookmark your friend's sites and they can bookmark yours as well. Good content will be the key in getting others to bookmark your site but you may need a little push to get others to see it.
Your tags and anchor text should relate to the content and ultimately be what you want to rank for by the search engines. One page of your site can have a page rank of zero while a different page can have a higher page rank. Your individual posts can also be ranked differently as they each have their own url but if you build it out with good content over time and build backlinks your page rank and traffic will begin to grow as well.
Here's an article that I uploaded to my site that I believe you will find usefull: http://www.derekbayer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/SEO_Article.pdf
Thanks Derek.
Now, I'm starting to get the picture. So what's really missing in my action is socializing/connecting with people.
I'm sincerely grateful for your explanation and patience. Will read the article to get a better picture.
regards,
Lilian
You are welcome -- I forget to mention to make sure you added a "Bookmark & Share" button to your blog to make it easy for readers to bookmark your content -- Looks like you already have that -- See - you are further along than you thought!!

Hi,
I'm new to bookmarking and don't quite understand the use of bookmarking sites.
Can anyone please enlighten me?
I followed Derek's advice to use OnlyWire to bookmark some sites but what does it do?
How often do I have to bookmark links?
- every blog posts? If I post the same blog post on 2 - 3 blog sites, does that mean I have to bookmark every posts on each of the blog sites?
- every video links? If I post the same video on 2 - 3 video sites, does that mean I have to bookmark the links for that video on every site?
My apologies for these questions as I don't understand backlinks, bookmarks etc.
Please help me understand the logic and working of bookmarking and backlinks.
regards,
Lilian
