SEO techniques can be divided into two categories:

1. On-page techniques – HTML code, sitemap – keywords density –good unique content (new –daily)

2. Off-page techniques –linkbuilding – estimated to be 90% of the effectiveness of your SEO campaign: These days, any reputable SEO expert will tell you that getting a large number of high quality backlinks from relevant websites is the key to getting good search engine rankings. You must still do a reasonably good job of on-page optimization to put your web pages into the best possible light, but getting good backlinks is what will really move your website to the top of the search engine rankings (which is where the traffic is!)

Backlinking Strategies:

Why is it important?

Assists in boosting page ranking in search engines. Each link is a “vote” for your site.

Not all “votes” are created equal (.gov .edu)

Links from higher ranking sites will pass on “Link Juice” to your site. You can check your page’s rank at www.prchecker.info , http://www.pagerankmarker.com -- do a google search and you will find many more. You can find your inbound links at YahooSiteExplorer (type in link: domain more accurate than google) I use MarketSamurai

FREE Methods:
Most Common is posting comments on Blogs, Forums,– Leave a Real Comment – add to the conversation

Can Use Free Tools Like Comment Kahuna, Fast Blog Finder, etc.. or paid tools like Market Samurai – Finds Relevant Websites for you to post comments and get backlinks

Web 2.0 pages : Set up a Squidoo Lens, Weebly Page, HubPage, Webpaint Page, etc.. –google loves these – Twitter – tweets are backlinks,

Article Marketing & Press Releases– put your links in the Author Bio, About Me page etc. (Use Anchor Text): Helps in 2 ways: first by providing backlinks, and second by giving you referral traffic from people who read the article on another website.

Social Bookmarking: Creates a one way Backling to your site. OnlyWire.com
Directory Submissions: Example: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html . www.jayde.com, etc..(I use Traffic Bug) Backlinks from directories can indeed provide some amount of “juice” to increase your visibility in the search engines. However, directory links by themselves are not going to do all that much for you

PAID Tools:

Neurolinker – creates a link page and has a social bookmarking community. Uses algorithms to interlink websites using all one way links, i.e., no two websites will have a reciprocal link to each other. The
end result is that webmasters get an ever-growing set of relevant, one way backlinks to their websites.

Traffic Bug – indexed quicky, site directory submissions and Bookmarking

Automates the process to free up your time(both have affiliate programs)

Summary:
A backlinking strategy for your website will be most effective when the backlinks have the following properties:
- Backlinks come from a large number of websites
- Backlinks are from websites and pages with content that is relevant to the content of your website
- Backlinks are one way links, not reciprocal links
- Backlinks use some of your site’s most relevant keywords as their anchor text
- Backlinks come from websites with good pagerank
- Backlinks come from websites on a variety of IP addresses
- Backlinks come from pages with a small number of outbound links.

Great tips and awesome summary, Derek.

I also use OnlyWire for bookmarking, to great success. For instance, my mentor advised me to follow is niche site example. He's been doing it for several months.
I built an almost identical site, posted it, then promoted it EXCLUSIVELY using OnlyWire.
My new site OUTRANKED my mentors the next day!!

Speaking of back links and referral traffic, I invite all readers of this thread to visit my blog and comment on a post or two.
